Women, Music, and Ritual in Uzbekistan

The purpose of this essay is to provide a survey of the musical activities of Jewish, Tajik, and Uzbek women and the role they play in the performance of music and ritual within the Central Asian Republic of Uzbekistan. The essay relies heavily on Theodore Levin's book, The Hundred Thousand Fools of God: musical travels in Central Asia (and Queens, New York), Indiana University Press: Bloomington and Indianapolis, 1996, because it is the only book available in the English language in which the music of Uzbekistan is dealt with in an Ethnomusicological study.
