Mantra: Indian Sacred Sounds
In this essay I am going to discuss questions concerning the fundamental nature of sound in connection with Hindu occult theories of the nature and mechanics of existence. As an ethnomusicologist with a deep interest in metaphysics and the study of consciousness within man, I am interested in the references made by the twentieth-century Western scholar of the Hindu system of religion called Yoga, and also Tibetan Buddhism, E. Evans-Wentz, which mention 'musical' sounds in connection with religious experiences. There is some suggestion in the above systems of religion that sound has a function within the universe which goes beyond mere auditory stimulus.
